Two different Medicare paths

Medicare Advantage vs Medicare Supplement

Medicare Advantage vs Medicare Supplement is a choice between receiving Medicare through a private Part C plan or keeping Original Medicare and adding Medigap to help cover specific cost-sharing.

Start with the structure

These are two different ways to build Medicare coverage

Medicare Advantage changes who administers your Part A and Part B benefits. Medicare Supplement insurance stays with Original Medicare and helps pay specified Medicare cost-sharing.

QuestionMedicare AdvantageMedicare Supplement
How do you receive Part A and Part B benefits?Through a Medicare-approved private plan.Through Original Medicare. The Medigap policy pays according to its standardized benefits after Medicare processes the claim.
Provider accessOften uses a plan network. HMO and PPO rules differ.Standard Medigap follows Original Medicare provider access. Medicare Select policies can use network requirements for some care.
Prescription drugsMost plans include Part D.Medigap policies sold today do not include Part D. If you need drug coverage with Original Medicare, you can join a separate Medicare drug plan.
Medical out-of-pocket structureThe plan has a yearly maximum for covered Part A and Part B services. The policy pays specified Original Medicare cost-sharing based on the standardized plan letter you own.
Extra benefitsPlans may include dental, vision, hearing, fitness, and other extras.Medigap is focused on supplementing Original Medicare cost-sharing. Extra services are not its core purpose.

Direct answer

No, Medigap does not work with Medicare Advantage

A Medigap policy cannot be used to pay Medicare Advantage copays, deductibles, or premiums. A company cannot sell you a Medigap policy while you are enrolled in Medicare Advantage unless you are switching back to Original Medicare.

Do not cancel Medigap until you understand your right to get it back

If you drop a Medigap policy to join Medicare Advantage, do not assume you can buy the same coverage later. Federal and Texas guaranteed-issue rights apply in specific situations, including certain first-time Medicare Advantage trial rights. Outside a protected enrollment right, an insurer may use medical underwriting.

Texas Medigap timing

Your Medigap enrollment window can change the decision

For Texans age 65 or older, the one-time Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months and begins when Part B starts. During that period, companies selling Medigap in Texas must offer coverage without denying you because of your health history.

01

Six-month open enrollment

This is the strongest time to shop for Medigap because medical underwriting cannot be used to deny the policy during the protected window.

02

Guaranteed-issue events

Loss of certain coverage, plan termination, moving out of some plan service areas, and specific trial rights can create another protected opportunity. The exact right and deadline depend on the event.

03

Outside protected rights

After your protected window ends, your ability to buy or switch Medigap can be limited. Do not leave existing coverage until you know what you can obtain next.

What to compare

Compare the delivery system, not the marketing headline

The best comparison is built around your providers, travel pattern, prescriptions, budget, and tolerance for plan rules.

Medicare Advantage may fit when

You are comfortable with the plan's network and authorization rules, the plan includes your prescriptions, the expected costs fit your budget, and you value having medical and drug coverage combined in one plan.

Original Medicare plus Medigap may fit when

You place a high value on broad Medicare provider access, you are comfortable paying a separate Medigap premium, and you want the standardized Medigap benefit structure rather than a Medicare Advantage network.

There is no universal winner

The right choice can be different for two spouses living in the same house. Medicare coverage is individual, and each person should compare the option against their own doctors, medications, travel, health needs, and budget.

Our four-step process

Education first, enrollment only after the details fit

We start with how Medicare works, then verify the details that can change the outcome for you.

01

Discovery Meeting

Identify your current coverage, Medicare dates, doctors, prescriptions, and what you value most about provider access.

02

Create Your Strategy

Compare premiums, cost-sharing, networks, Part D, travel, and Medigap enrollment rights.

03

Plan Enrollment

Make a change only after the next coverage is confirmed and the applicable enrollment right is documented.

04

Annual Reviews

Review Medicare Advantage each year. Revisit Medigap only when there is a reason and before canceling existing coverage.
